A DECLARATION OF SUPPORT FOR EDUCATING THE WHOLE LEARNER

We know how learning happens. We’re ready to do something about it.

The report is in and the conclusion is clear: Children learn best when we treat them as whole people, with social and emotional as well as academic needs. To best prepare our young people to thrive in school and in life, we must help them develop an array of skills. Skills like Perseverance. Empathy. Respect. Self-mastery. Character. Creativity. Collaboration. Civic engagement. And―on the strength of these values―Academic Excellence.

That’s at the heart of the new report released by The Aspen Institute National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development. From a Nation at Risk to a Nation at Hope draws on input from more than 200 scientists, educators, youth, parent and community groups, and policymakers to outline a set of recommendations that will transform our schools and communities.  Specifically the report recommends the importance ofproviding access to quality summer school and after-school programming for each young person.

The Tennessee Afterschool Network is in firm agreement in their support of the report’s conclusions and recommendations to improve the social, emotional, and academic well-being of each and every child. Together we can reshape learning and change lives in America’s classrooms, schools, and communities.
